Sunflower - Care Sheet
Overview
Sunflowers are the cheerful icons of summer, prized for their bold blooms, fast growth, and ability to feed pollinators and birds. The widely grown garden sunflower is Helianthus annuus, an annual known for large, daisy-like flower heads and a deep taproot that seeks out moisture and nutrients. The genus Helianthus also includes perennial species, but most home gardeners grow annual sunflowers for seasonal color and seeds. They’re straightforward to raise from seed, thrive in full sun, and make excellent cut flowers. Young plants often exhibit heliotropism—turning their heads to follow the sun—before maturing to face east at bloom.
Whether you choose towering giants for a sunny fence line or compact varieties for containers, sunflowers are beginner-friendly and rewarding. Plant in a sunny, wind-sheltered spot with well-drained soil, water deeply but infrequently once established, and you’ll enjoy vibrant blooms in as little as 70–95 days from sowing.
