Pickle Plant - Care Sheet
Overview
The Pickle Plant most commonly sold as a houseplant is Delosperma echinatum, a quirky, low-maintenance succulent from South Africa. Its plump, bristled “pickle-like” leaves and trailing habit make it a standout in windowsills, mixed succulent pots, or hanging planters. True to its arid origins, it thrives on bright light, infrequent watering, and a gritty, fast-draining soil. If you’re new to succulents, this is an easy, rewarding choice that stays compact and forgiving—so long as you resist the urge to overwater.
Note: “Pickle plant” is also a common name for a different species, Kleinia stapeliiformis (formerly Senecio stapeliiformis). Care is broadly similar (bright light, drought tolerance, excellent drainage), but pet safety differs—see Toxicity & Pet Safety below.
